Kitenge 101: How to Choose Wax Print Fabric and Brief Your Tailor
From reading a print to buying the right amount of fabric, everything you need before taking kitenge to your tailor.
Few things are as satisfying as a kitenge outfit made exactly for you. Getting there starts with choosing the right fabric and giving your tailor a clear brief.
Reading the print
- Large, bold motifs make a statement on simple shapes: a fitted dress, a straight skirt or a shirt.
- Small, busy prints suit detailed designs with ruffles, pleats and peplums because they hide seams.
- Stripes and geometrics look sharpest when the tailor lines them up at the seams; mention this up front.
Quality checks
Good wax print is crisp, colourfast and printed with sharp edges. Rub a damp white cloth on a corner: the colour should not come off. Brands like DA, Highlytex, Afro Milele, Paksa and Duanas are known for reliable prints.
How much fabric do you need?
- Shirt or blouse: about 2 yards.
- Knee-length dress: about 3 yards.
- Maxi dress or two-piece set: about 6 yards (a full piece).
- Matching outfits for a couple: two pieces, ideally from the same print run.
Briefing your tailor
- Bring a photo of the style, plus a garment that fits you well.
- Agree on the fitting date and the final collection date before an event.
- Ask for a lining in light-coloured or thin prints.
Shop our kitenge wax prints, sold by the piece, and plan your December wedding outfits early.
