What to Wear to a Kenyan Wedding: Guest Outfit Ideas for Every Ceremony
Church service, garden reception, ruracio or evening party: outfit ideas for wedding guests that respect the occasion and stand out for the right reasons.
December is wedding season, and many guests attend two or three ceremonies in one month. Here is how to dress for each part of the celebration.
Church ceremony
Choose modest coverage: shoulders covered or a shawl to hand, and a hem at or below the knee. Midi dresses with sleeves, jumpsuits with a blazer, or a smart two-piece set all work. Avoid white and ivory; that colour belongs to the bride.
Garden reception
Flowing maxi dresses and floral prints come into their own outdoors. Pick block heels or wedges so you do not sink into the lawn, and bring a light cover-up for the evening chill.
Ruracio and traditional ceremonies
Kitenge is the natural choice. Many families choose a colour theme, so ask the hosts first. A tailored kitenge dress or a matching set for couples looks wonderful in photos.
Evening party
This is the time for satin, sheen and statement shapes: a halter gown, a mermaid maxi or a corset dress with heels and a clutch.
For the men
A well-fitted suit is always right. For daytime and garden weddings, a short-sleeve safari suit or a linen shirt with official trousers keeps you cool and smart.
Guest checklist
- Check the dress code and colour theme on the invitation.
- Try your full outfit on, shoes included, a week before.
- Pack a small bag with plasters, a phone charger and an envelope for your gift.
Find your look in maxi dresses and gowns or two-piece sets.
